Daily steps along
The cracked pavement
Followed by many
Out stretched hands
Needing your back
To lean upon
Handing out bags
Containing their troubles
Believing in you
Breathing in you
Depending upon you
Requiring upon you
As their caretaker
To surrender everything
And gain nothing
Your heart searches
For a drop
Of warm appreciation
Within the dearth
The spirit pushes
Along the road
Guided by hope
Within this barren
Existence
“The spirit pushes
Along the road
Guided by hope” Beautiful.
“breathing in you” wow, what an image, a whole new layer of sheer dependence and want.
the caretaker the being who takes on everything and gains the reward in their heart xxjen
“Believing in you
Breathing in you
Depending upon you…”
I love this stanza. I love what it does to the momentum of the poem.
Caretaking, when the other person is physically or psycologically, incapable of returning in kind can leave us running on empty. A well written poem, David.

The role of caretaker demands much and gives little for some but too others it is its own reward.
Guided by hope…. That’s my favorite line!
